For my final project, I created a costume collection for a made-up Netflix series called 'Sewn Into Scandal,' set in Mother Clap's Molly House. I was particularly interested in exploring how gender, identity, and historical dress intersected in the 18th-century queer scene. I used the historical figures from my dissertation as inspiration, especially Princess Seraphina, who stood out to me as a bold figure for queer visibility, and John Cooper, the gentleman’s valet, whom I envisioned as a tailor.
Seraphina and Cooper were really the same person in history, but I chose to separate them into two characters for this project. I wanted each one to show a different side of identity, and how they each expressed themselves in public and in private. I styled their costumes with a nod to Vivienne Westwood, using strong colours and a bit of punk attitude.
These looks are my way of celebrating resistance, community, and the wild, joyful mess that comes with being true to yourself. This project meant a lot to me emotionally, and it was really where Dandy & Rebel first began to take shape.
