Year One - Innovation in Costume
Squire Hare Body Padding
For this module, I worked with the character Squire Hare from a 1935 Churchman’s cigarette card. My goal was to design a costume that turned a person into a convincing animal. I focused on the hare’s qualities as both a creature and a performer: lean, agile, and strong. I started by building body padding onto a Lycra base suit, treating the process like a form of sculpture. This created a base that could be further developed with costume details, dye, breakdown, and headpieces made by props students. The project allowed me to explore new ideas with shape and form.
